Top 10 Mortifying Moments, Part 2: Impressing a New Boyfriend Anita-Style

by Anita 6 Comments

For the benefit of you single ladies out there, I'm sharing some lessons learned from another of my umpteen "most" mortifying moments today. This particular trip down nightmare lane takes us back about fifteen years, but I remember it like it was yesterday because yup, it was just that awesome. Back in the day, students attending So Cal’s universities weren’t utterly and ridiculously spoiled with fancy restaurant options all over campus. (Not that I'm bitter. I'm not!!) So during my undergrad years at U.C.L.A., Taco Bell was the on-campus eaterie of choice. And during my law school years at … [Read more...]

Marriage: A State of the Union Address

by Anita 2 Comments

A wise girlfriend and I had an interesting talk over lunch the other day, musing over the state of marital affairs in contemporary American society, and even within our own circle of friends.  We were sorry to reflect on the increasing number of marriages that have fallen, or are falling, apart in our midst, but empathetic because we understand just how difficult marriage can be/is (none exempted).  If you're married and have lived in this world long enough, without blind eyes or a snooty, judging heart, to experience or at least learn from others' experiences, there should be no room, desire … [Read more...]

Wait. Does Rob Fukuzaki Think I’m Stalking Him?!

by Anita 1 Comment

There's a story behind this photo, taken last night, and why, once again, I broke habit and asked a (semi-)celebrity (this time a major TV network sports news anchor) whether he wouldn't mind taking a picture with me. One afternoon many, many years ago, when I was a spry, young recent college graduate, I sat at home flipping through television channels when "The Oprah Winfrey Show" piqued my interest. That day, Oprah was spotlighting, or basically pimping out, "The Ten Most Eligible Bachelors of TV News" from across the fifty states. She was inviting all the single ladies out there to write … [Read more...]

The Mating Dance: Call-and-Response

by Anita 4 Comments

I'm glad I'm not a man - at least in that I'd hate to be the one expected to do the initiating if interested in someone romantically. After all, it takes some skill to strategize, and cojones to execute, the very vulnerable task of approaching a stranger to whom you're attracted, making a good first impression, and hoping she finds your advances (and tactics?) charming and effective. (Granted, I'm talking in the limited context of the traditional "men initiate and women respond" paradigm, which isn't so different from this astounding mating dance/ritual found in the animal world.) So … [Read more...]

Blown away by the poem written and recited by exce Blown away by the poem written and recited by exceptional 22yo Amanda Gorman at Biden’s inauguration this morning.
"THE HILL WE CLIMB" Poem Transcript:
Dr. Biden, Madam Vice President, Mr. Emhoff, Americans, and the world.
When day comes, we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never ending shade?
The loss we carry, a sea. We must wade.
We've graved the belly of the beast.
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace.
In the norms and notions of what just is, isn't always justice.
And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it. Somehow we do it.
Somehow we've weathered and witnessed a nation that isn't broken, but simply unfinished.
We, the successors of a country and the time where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one.
And yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine, but that doesn't mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect.
We are striving to forge our union with purpose.
To compose a country, committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and conditions of man.
And so we lift our gaze, not to what stands between us, but what stands before us
We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside.
We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek harm to none and harmony for all.
Let the globe, if nothing else say, this is true.
That even as we grieved, we grew.
That even as we hurt, we hoped.
That even as we tired, we tried that will forever be tied together victorious.
Not because we will never again know defeat, but because we will never again sow division.
Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid
If we're to live up to our own time, then victory won't lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we've made.
That is the promise to glade the hill we climb.
If only we dare it's because being American is more than a pride we inherit.
It's the past we step into and how we repair it.
We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside
Reposting @thejoywarrior. She called it. This is Reposting @thejoywarrior. She called it. This is nothing less than terrorism. By U.S. citizens. On their own Capitol. To protest the lawful, democratic ousting of a President who can not acknowledge facts or truth, or accept defeat, or abide by - much less uphold - the law and our Constitution. God, please humble and hold our nation accountable, that we might be blessed once more. NO ONE can “MAGA” but You, God. You, who desires goodness, humility, and brotherly love among us all.
