Mind blown.
We witnessed a spectacular IMAX planetarium show at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco yesterday. Shown on a dizzyingly massive dome ceiling, “Dark Universe” explores today’s greatest cosmic mysteries in a vast and wondrous starscape.
After our breathtaking virtual voyage through space, to help us try to grasp the breadth and size of the universe, we’re told that if the dome above us represented Earth, our entire planet would be the universe, at least in its current state of constant expansion.
Realizing how very, very miniscule and seemingly insignificant we, our planet, our entire galaxy really are, and how vast and infinite our GOD, the Creator of it all, is – left me…disturbed.
Disturbed because I couldn’t, can’t, fathom how a GOD that “above and beyond” and that powerful could love people so much.
Disturbed because I can’t grasp how or why GOD would care enough to design us so intricately (to the smallest, microscopic detail) and uniquely – each in God’s own image. And how or why He’d care enough to know us so intimately or watch over us so faithfully.
Disturbed because I can’t imagine how GOD could humble himself so low as to make himself human small…and vulnerable, and come down to walk and breathe and hurt and heal and teach and love among us, and then die to pay for our rebellious and self-destructive declaration of independence from Him.
All of it. Unfathomable.
And yet, I know, deep within, that there is a Truth, however inexplicable, that stands forever.
Beyond these cosmic mysteries is the great mystery, and everlasting Truth, of God’s love for us.
For He didn’t have to create us, or love us, or give His life for us, or wait for us. But He did. He does.
Study the stars on a clear night. Study the beauty of the natural world around you. Study how fearfully and wonderfully you were made. It was not by accident. It was intentional. It was meticulous. It was tender.
You will see. The greatest mystery, and fact, is how GOD loves us so.
