Mind blown.
We saw a truly spectacular IMAX planetarium show at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco yesterday. Shown on a dizzyingly massive dome ceiling, “Dark Universe” explores today’s greatest cosmic mysteries in a vast starscape of beauty and wonder.
After a breathtaking virtual voyage through space, to give us an idea of the breadth and size of the universe, we’re told that if the dome above us was planet Earth, our entire planet would be the universe, at least in its current state of constant expansion.
Watching the show and realizing how very, very miniscule and seemingly insignificant we, our planet, our galaxy really is, and how vast and infinite our GOD, the creator of it all, really is – left me…disturbed.
Disturbed because I couldn’t, can’t, fathom HOW a God that big and that powerful could love us people so much.
Disturbed because I can’t grasp HOW or WHY he could care enough to make us so intricately and uniquely – each in His image, or know us so intimately and watch over us so tenderly and faithfully.
Disturbed because I can’t imagine HOW he could humble himself so low as to make himself small…and vulnerable, like us, and come down to earth to walk and breathe and hurt and teach and heal and love among us, and then to pay the ultimate price for our rebellious and self-destructive declaration of independence, for us.
All of it. It’s just too…beyond and above, for me to even begin comprehending.
But. I know, in the deepest core of my being, that there is a Truth that can’t be shaken, even if it can’t be solved, not by mere humans anyway.
Beyond these cosmic mysteries is the great mystery, and everlasting Truth, of God’s love for us.
He didn’t have to create us, or love us, or give his life for us, or wait for us, but He did. He does.
Study the stars on a clear night. Study the beauty of the natural world around you. Study how fearfully and wonderfully you were made. It was not by accident. It was intentional. It was meticulous. It was designed.
You will know too. The greatest mystery is how God loves us so.
